Students Against Discrimination has called for a protest against the bail of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson of Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote and a former leader of Iskcon, in a sedition case filed against him for allegedly disrespecting the national flag.

The student organisation called for a procession after the Jummah prayers at 2pm today (2 May) in front of Anderkilla Shahi Jame Mosque in Chattogram.

The protest is also for demanding justice for the murder of Advocate Alif, who was killed during a clash over Chinmoy's remand on 26 November.

Chinmoy was granted bail by the High Court on Wednesday (30 April), but the bail was later suspended on the same day by the Appellate Division Chamber Court until the next hearing.

Meanwhile, SAD leader Hasnat Abdullah in a Facebook post said, "I do not consider Chinnmoy's bail to be an isolated incident. From the very beginning of the Chinnmoy case, Indian imperialism has tried to exert unjust influence over this country.

"Was Chinnmoy's bail also granted as a submission to that pressure?"

He warned the government saying, "If you pave the way for Indian aggression by standing on Alif's blood, the consequences will not be good."

Chinmoy is accused of sedition in a case filed on 31 October for allegedly desecrating the national flag. He was arrested from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on 25 November by detectives. He was handed over to Chattogram Metropolitan Police the following day.

Following his remand hearing on 26 November, a clash between law enforcers, lawyers, and Chinmoy's followers resulted in the death of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif.

On 3 December, the court postponed Chinmoy's bail hearing to 2 January 2025, as no lawyer represented him during the earlier proceedings.

Later, on 12 December, Supreme Court lawyer Rabindra Ghosh submitted an authorisation letter on behalf of local lawyer Sumit Acharya. The court then ordered the presence of the lawyer for verification of the document.

On 4 February, the HC issued a rule asking why Chinmoy should not be granted bail in the case.

The matter was later placed on the bench's cause list for 19 March, with the hearing date set for 23 April.

On 23 April, the date was postponed to 30 April following a request for more time by the state counsel.
