Gridlock plagues Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Munshiganj

Intense traffic congestion has been created due to malfunctioned vehicles and road accidents at the Gazaria portion of the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Munshiganj since this morning (21 April).
As a result, vehicular movement on the Cumilla-bound lane of the highway has halted completely, causing immense suffering for the commuters, reports our correspondent.
Traffic congestion was prevailing as of filing this report at 8:50am.
"Police are trying to bring the traffic situation to normal by removing the malfunctioning vehicles from the highway," Md Showkat Hossain, officer-in-charge of the Bhaberchar Highway Police outpost in Gazaria, said.
According to sources, a collision took place between a mini-covered van and a microbus in the Baushia area in Gazaria Upazila early today.
Moreover, the vehicular movement on the Cumilla-bound lane was stopped after two trucks carrying goods malfunctioned at the Baushia and Baluakandi areas under the Gazaria portion of the highway, sources said.
As the day progressed, the gridlock turned intense, stretching to a 9km area of the highway till 8am.
Ujjal Hossain, a car driver heading towards Cumilla, said, "I have found gridlock since crossing Vaterchar Bridge. The traffic congestion has stretched to Gumti Bridge. It has taken me one and a half hours to cover this 9km area."
Kurban Ali, a truck driver, said, "I can't tell why there has been a gridlock. I have been stuck in a traffic jam for a long time. I don't know when I will be able to reach my destination."
