A group of armed men abducted a man from the hills of Baharchhara in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar today (15 April) and demanded a ransom of Tk10 lakh.

The incident occurred around 7am, confirmed Farid Ullah, Union Parishad member of Ward-7 in Baharchhara union.

Farid Ullah said the abductee Mohammad Delowar, 25, along with two others, had gone to the nearby hills to collect thatch. They were suddenly chased by an armed group, who managed to capture Delowar while the other two narrowly escaped.

"Delowar's wife received several phone calls from the abductors demanding Tk10 lakh for her husband's release. They warned that if the money was not paid, she should prepare to receive her husband's body. The family has informed local authorities of the incident," Farid added.

Sub-Inspector Shuvo Ranjan Saha, in-charge of Baharchhara Investigation Centre, said although no formal complaint had been lodged by the family, police have initiated an investigation into the matter.

According to Cox's Bazar District Police and other sources, over the past 15 months, at least 245 people have reportedly been abducted from various areas of Teknaf.
