Barca put one foot in the semi-finals with stunning 4-0 win over Dortmund

FC Barcelona thrashed Borussia Dortmund 4-0 in a one-sided Champions League quarter-final first-leg encounter at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in Barcelona on 9 April 2025.

Robert Lewandowski netted a brace, contributing to a devastating Barcelona performance that leaves them a step away from securing a semi-final spot for the first time since 2019. With this victory, Barcelona extended their unbeaten run to 23 matches.

The five-time champions took control of the match early, with red-hot winger Raphinha breaking the deadlock. Lewandowski also reached 40 goals for the season with his two strikes. Teenager Lamine Yamal was a constant threat, playing a key role in Barcelona's fourth goal, which sealed the dominant win as Dortmund faltered.

Barcelona, who last lifted the Champions League trophy in 2015, will now look to secure a semi-final berth when they travel to Germany to face Dortmund in the second leg.

Hansi Flick made his usual selections for the match, with only one change—opting for Fermin Lopez over Gavi in an attacking midfield role to support the potent attacking trio. Barcelona seized control from the outset, with Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel forced into strong saves from Yamal and Lewandowski.

Yamal, 17, proved to be an unstoppable force throughout the match. He was involved in several threatening attacks, firing across goal and then missing narrowly. Dortmund struggled to slow him down, unable to cope with his pace and skill.

The home side opened the scoring after Karim Adeyemi gave away a free-kick in a dangerous position, pulling down Jules Koundé by his dreadlocks as he attempted a counter-attack. Fermin Lopez delivered the free-kick to the back post, where Inigo Martínez nodded it towards Pau Cubarsi. The young defender's shot was heading over the line before Raphinha arrived to slide it in, securing his 12th goal of the season. The Brazilian winger nervously awaited VAR confirmation, but the goal stood.

Yamal and Raphinha continued to combine well in attack, but were unable to finalise their chances. Meanwhile, Dortmund had a golden opportunity to equalise when Serhou Guirassy, who had 10 goals in the competition, failed to convert from a promising position. The forward was played through but misfired, sending the ball wide with only Wojciech Szczęsny to beat. Guirassy later missed another opportunity before half-time, hitting the side-netting after failing to connect with an Adeyemi cross.

Barcelona punished Dortmund for their missed chances early in the second half. Lewandowski, who had already scored 9 goals in the competition, netted his 10th after just three minutes. Yamal delivered a perfect cross to Raphinha, whose header found Lewandowski at the far post to nod home from close range.

Lopez struck the post and sent a shot just over the bar as Barcelona pressed for a third goal to put the tie to bed. The third goal arrived in the 66th minute, with Lopez providing the assist for Lewandowski, who drilled a low shot past Kobel at the near post. This marked Lewandowski's 29th goal in 28 matches against his former club, Dortmund.

The final goal came in the 76th minute, as Yamal, who had tormented Dortmund's defence throughout the match, was played through by Raphinha to seal a well-deserved goal. With Dortmund exposed and leaving too much space, Yamal calmly finished, rounding off a commanding performance by Barcelona.
