'Captaincy is a BCB Matter, Liton Must Return to Form First'

Litton Das's recent struggles with form have cast doubt on his suitability for the T20I captaincy, despite being a leading contender for the role following Nazmul Hossain Shanto's decision to step down in December 2024. While Litton had a successful stint as captain during Bangladesh's series win in the West Indies later that year, his batting performance has been inconsistent, with only one half-century in his last 24 matches. This lack of form has led to questions about whether he should be considered for the role on a permanent basis.

Facing the media on Saturday, Khaled Mahmud Sujon, the head coach of Gulshan Cricket Club,weighed in on the matter, emphasising that Litton's return to form is crucial before any discussions about the captaincy can progress. "All players are prepared, but the decision will be made by the board," Sujon said in a recent media briefing. "Liton has captained Bangladesh before, and we know he has the capability. However, the board must first decide whether he will even be part of the team. If he's not in the squad, how can he be considered for captaincy?"

While Litton's leadership has been widely praised, especially for his performance during the West Indies series, his batting form has been a significant concern. Since the end of 2023, Litton has struggled to find consistency, managing only one half-century in his last 24 matches. His recent performance in the West Indies, where he scored just 17 runs in three T20 matches, further highlighted the need for him to regain his form. Sujon remains hopeful, stating, "Bad times happen to everyone, but I believe Litton will return. He's trying hard, and I'm confident that he will finish his career on a high."

Taskin Ahmed, another possible captaincy candidate, has also been discussed as an option, despite his limited leadership experience. Sujon expressed support for fast bowlers as potential leaders, citing examples like Wasim Akram and Imran Khan, who successfully captained their respective teams. "The idea that fast bowlers can't be captains is wrong. It's about having knowledge and leadership qualities, and Taskin certainly has the potential."
