Azizur Rahman Bachchu Mollah, the father of Information Adviser Mahfuj Alam, has been injured in an attack allegedly carried out by Jubo Dal men in Lakshmipur yesterday (30 March).

Members of Students Against Discrimination brought out a rally around 10:30pm yesterday. They demanded punishment of those involved in the attack.

BNP leader Bachchu Molla is the organizational secretary of Ichhapur Union BNP.

According to local sources, BNP and JCD (Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal) activists allegedly attacked the house of Mehedi Manju, vice-president of the Upazila Chhatra League. During the attack, Bachchu Molla, father of Mahfuz, tried to intervene. Bachchu and Manju are uncle and nephew by relation. As he tried to stop the attack, a group of attackers became enraged and assaulted him, injuring his hand.

He was later rescued and treated at the Upazila Health Complex. Currently, he is at home recovering.

Mehedi Manju, the vice-president of Upazila Chhatra League, stated, "I have never harmed anyone through politics, yet I am being forced to flee. I had gone home in the afternoon to see my ailing mother. As soon as BNP activists got the news, they attacked my house. I had already left by then. My uncle, Bachchu Molla, tried to stop them and was attacked."

When contacted for further information, Bachchu Molla's family members confirmed that Bachchu Molla was doing well and staying at home.

Ramganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Bashar said, "A scuffle broke out between two groups in front of Bachchu Molla's house. He attempted to calm both sides, but one group attacked him. He was injured in the hand and taken to the hospital for treatment. I also visited him at the hospital. Later, he was taken home.

"However, no official complaints have been filed with the police. During the protest march, he was in the hospital."
