Last-minute rush: Eid travellers leaving Dhaka without much hassle

As Eid-ul-Fitr looms, dependent on moon sighting this evening (30 March), Dhaka saw a final wave of passengers departing today.

The biggest religious festival of Muslims is being celebrated in Saudi Arabia and Middle Eastern countries today. Bangladesh is expected to celebrate Eid tomorrow (31 March).

Despite the expected surge, the Mohakhali bus terminal remained relatively calm, with passengers boarding buses smoothly.

However, there are also complaints against some transport companies of charging high fares.

There was a steady stream of departures, but passenger numbers were significantly lower than the available bus capacity, our reporter reports from the spot.

Lineman Ali Akbar said several hundred buses are now at the terminal, ready to leave with passengers. 

"Although there are passengers, it is very insignificant compared to the number of buses," he added.

At the terminal, passengers cited work and business commitments for their delayed travel. 

Sakib Al Abrar, a service holder headed to Mymensingh, said, "I couldn't leave earlier due to office work and only received leave at the last moment, so I am travelling today."

Mizanur Rahman, a cosmetics business owner, shared a similar sentiment, saying, "I was busy with work until yesterday, so I'm heading home today. However, our shop will remain open until late on the night before Eid, as my brother will be managing it."

Meanwhile, passengers alleged that "Showkhin Paribahan" buses were charging inflated fares.

Buses traveling from Mohakhali to Mymensingh were reportedly charging Tk400, exceeding the government-set Tk320. 

Following intervention by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) magistrate and owners' association representatives, the transport companies agreed to adhere to the official fare and pledged to avoid future overcharging.
