17-year-old killed in dispute over 'laughing emoji reaction on Facebook post' in Sherpur

A 17-year-old boy was hacked to death today by another teenager in Sherpur's Nalitabari upazila following a dispute allegedly over using a laughing emoji reaction to a Facebook post.

The victim was identified as Abu Naim, son of Ismail Hossain from the Nayabil area, said Officer-in-Charge Sohel Rana of Nalitabari Police Station.

The incident occurred around 11:45 am. Naim was critically injured and rushed to Nalitabari Upazila Health Complex.

As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors later declared him dead, the OC said.

Locals caught the suspect Sabuj Mia, 18, of Andharupara and handed over to the police, he added.

According to police and locals, Sabuj, who had been living in Gazipur, had returned home for the Eid holidays.

The altercation between the two teens began about a month ago when Naim reacted with a 'haha' emoji on one of Sabuj's posts on Facebook, leading to a heated argument over Messenger.

On Saturday, when Sabuj saw Naim at Nayabil Bazar, he attacked him with a knife, stabbing him in the chest.

Legal proceedings were underway regarding the matter, added the OC.
