Bangladeshi man injured in attack by Indians along Lalmonirhat border

A Bangladeshi man was severely injured in an attack by several Indian nationals in Lalmonirhat over an alleged fishing dispute on Saturday.

The victim, Madab Chandra, 40, was hospitalised following the assault which took place in the Dulali area of Lohakuchi border under Goral Union in Kaliganj Upazila.

Lt Col Mehdi, commanding officer of 15 BGB Battalion, said a dispute had erupted over fishing in the Malda River, leading to an altercation between Madab Chandra and Indian nationals.

Upon receiving information of the situation, he went to the site and brought the situation under control.

Locals said Madab Chandra, a resident of Lohakuchi and son of the late Madan Mohan, had gone to the Malda River at the Lohakuchi border where he had set up a tepai—a bamboo fishing trap.

Locals alleged Indian nationals frequently stole fish from this trap.

When Madab protested against such theft on Saturday morning, a group of Indian citizens attacked him, leaving him unconscious.

Upon being informed by another Indian national, Madab's family members and local residents rescued him and took him to the hospital.

As tensions escalated over the issue, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) intervened and brought the situation under control.

The BGB later protested the incident at a flag meeting with the India's Border Security Force (BSF).
