The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have decided to reward and recruit five people into its auxiliary force for their assistance in capturing robbers posing as RAB men at a Dhanmondi house owned by Alankar Niketan Jewelers owner MA Hannan Azad yesterday (26 March).

Talebur Rahman, DMP's deputy commissioner of media and public relations, announced the decisions at a press conference today (27 March) at the DMP Media Centre in Dhaka.

Police have already captured six of the alleged robbers.

The arrestees are Farhad Bin Mosharraf, 33, Yasin Hasan, 22, Mobasher Ahmed, 23, and Wakil Mahmud, 26, Abdullah, 32, and Sumon, 29, according to DMP.

Apart from the arrestees, there are eight other suspects currently absconding, said Talebur.

He added that a case has been filed with the Dhanmondi Model Police Station over the incident following a complaint by Touhidul Islam, nephew of Azad.

After the case was filed, a raid was conducted in the Hazaribagh Police Station area in the early morning (March 27) with the help of information and technology, and Abdullah and Sumon, who were involved in the robbery, were arrested.

Earlier yesterday, at around 4:40am, group of criminals, disguised as members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), stormed a six-storey building on Dhanmondi Road 8, owned by MA Hannan, proprietor of Alankar Niketan Jewellers.

They looted Tk 36.5 lakh and 2.5 bhoris of gold ornaments, according to the case filed with Dhanmondi Police Station.

The case accused 24 individuals of involvement in the crime.

According to the case statement, the robbers arrived in three microbuses and a car yesterday around 4:40am. They approached the security guards, claiming, "We are Rab personnel, and a magistrate is with us. We are conducting a raid—open the gate immediately!" Some wore what appeared to be RAB vests.

When the guards refused to let them in before morning, the robbers threatened them and forcibly climbed over the gate. Once inside, they tied up security personnel, caretaker Sheikh Riazul Islam, and driver Bijoy Mia, the statement said.

They then looted Tk45,100 from the office assistant at SM Sourcing, a buying house on the ground floor and robbed Tk 22 lakh from the third-floor office, assaulting the staff in the process.

The miscreants stole Tk 13 lakh after ransacking a cabinet on the fourth-floor office and broke into Hannan's duplex apartment on the fifth and sixth floors, seizing Tk 1.50 lakh, gold earrings, and a necklace worth around Tk 3.75 lakh.

As the robbers attempted to abduct Hannan, a Dhanmondi police patrol team arrived and rescued him. The criminals attacked the police with iron chains and rods, injuring several officers.

Meanwhile, locals caught and beat up four robbers before handing them over to the police.

Authorities recovered two Rab vests and three caps with Rab logos, Tk45,100, a travel bag containing iron chains and screwdrivers and two mobile phones

Investigations are ongoing, with police working to apprehend the remaining suspects.
