Nine candidates, including the son and a nephew of late Jatiya Party (JP) chairman HM Ershad, on Monday submitted their nominations to contest the Rangpur-3 by-polls.

On the last day of submission, JP candidate Saad Ershad, Awami League candidate Advocate Rejaul Karim Raju and BNP-nominated Rita Rahman from the People's Party of Bangladesh submitted their nomination in the evening.

Rangpur Regional Election Officer and Returning Officer GM Sahatab Uddin confirmed the information.

Among other candidates, Tawhidur Rahman Mandal from Khelafat Majlis, Kazi Shahidullah from Ganofront, Shafiul Alam from National People's Party and Mohammad Ekramul from Bangladesh Congress also submitted their papers too.

Meanwhile, Hussain Maqbool Shahriar Asif, nephew of HM Ershad, and BNP rebel candidate Kawsar Zaman Babla submitted their nominations as independent candidates.

But, SM Yasir, JP central joint-general secretary, and SM Fakhruzzaman Jahangir, JP Rangpur district general secretary, and City AL's secretary for labour affairs MA Majid did not submit their nominations.

The deadline for submission of nomination papers was September 9, while the date for scrutinising those is September 11 (Wednesday) and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is September 16.

Voting of the Rangpur-3 by-election will be held on upcoming October 5.

Over 4.42 lakh voters, including more than 2.21 lakh males and over 2.2 lakh females, will cast their votes through electronic voting machines at 175 booths in the constituency.
