A group of abductors demanded Tk1 crore in ransom after abducting an Awami League (AL) leader in Khulna.

Eventually, they agreed to release him for Tk50 lakh, but their plan was foiled when law enforcers intervened.

The Detective Branch (DB) of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) later detained five individuals in connection with the abduction, and legal proceedings are underway against them, said KMP DB Inspector Md Taimur Islam.

The detained individuals include former president of Khulna Metropolitan Jubo Dal Mahabub Hasan Piaru, Jatiya Nagorik Committee leader Imon Molla, Executive Editor of local newspaper The Daily Prabartan Ziaus Sadat, and Imon's associates Joy Hasan and Sakib Rahman.

Meanwhile, the victim was identified as Nur Alam, general secretary of Gazipur's Sreepur Awami League and a businessman.

Acting on a tip-off, the DB police conducted raids across different parts of the city from yesterday evening (22 March) till late at night, said Taimur.

The abducted Awami League leader was later rescued from a house in the Bosupara area following their confessions.

Taimur Islam said Nur Alam's son resides in Khulna's Bosupara area, and the politician was staying in the city accordingly.

On Friday night (21 March), he was abducted and held in a house in Bosupora, with the kidnappers demanding Tk1 crore as ransom from his son.

After receiving the complaint, DB police launched an operation.

"One of the abductors, Imon Molla, was first detained in front of Hotel Grand Placid in the Moylapota area while attempting to collect the ransom. Based on his confession, police later conducted raids across the city and detained the remaining suspects," the DB inspector said.

Preparations are underway to file a case against them, he added.
