The growth of Bangladesh's air conditioner market has paved the way for a thriving domestic manufacturing sector, with more than 90% of ACs sold now produced locally. As a key player in this transformation, Walton has established itself as a market leader, offering innovative, energy-efficient and affordable air conditioning solutions. In an interview with The Business Standard, Walton AC's Chief Business Officer (CBO), Md Tanvir Rahman, explored the current market landscape, Walton's competitive edge, and the advanced technologies that set its ACs apart.

What is the market for air conditioners in Bangladesh?

The air conditioner market in Bangladesh has experienced significant growth in recent years, driven by rising temperatures, increased urbanisation and a growing middle class. As of 2024, annual sales of AC units went up to 650,000, up from 450,000 units in 2023.

This surge in demand has led to a robust domestic manufacturing sector, with over 50% of ACs sold now produced locally.

The expansion of local manufacturing has made ACs more affordable, with prices like Walton's 1-ton inverter ACs currently ranging between Tk49,900 and Tk72,990, 1.5-ton inverter ACs currently ranging between Tk65,900 and Tk81,900 and 2-ton inverter ACs currently ranging between Tk79,900 and Tk95,990. This affordability, introducing new technologies and after-sales benefits, has further stimulated market growth.

Looking ahead, the AC market in Bangladesh is projected to continue its upward trajectory, with expectations of over 20% growth in the coming years.

What is Walton's position in the AC market?

Walton is the leader in Bangladesh's air conditioner market. With robust domestic manufacturing, the company delivers affordable, energy-efficient, and innovative AC solutions, solidifying its leadership in the industry.

Walton leads the manufacturing of residential air conditioners, light commercial air conditioners and commercial air conditioners in Bangladesh.

What are Walton ACs' distinctive features compared to other brands? What modern technological advantages do they offer?

Walton ACs stand out in Bangladesh's air conditioner market due to their cutting-edge technology, energy efficiency and user-friendly features. Compared to other brands, Walton integrates advanced innovations to enhance comfort, efficiency and convenience.

For example, Walton is the only brand in Asia to receive a 6-star energy rating for its air conditioners, making it the most energy-efficient AC in the continent. This certification has been officially awarded by the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) and the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), reinforcing its superior performance and efficiency.

This achievement sets Walton apart from its competitors, solidifying its position as a pioneer in energy-efficient air conditioning technology in Asia. Besides, Walton ACs boast an exceptional Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER), delivering powerful cooling with minimal electricity consumption. With Super Saver Technology, Walton ACs outperform competitors in energy efficiency, making them the most cost-effective choice on the market.

Walton AC's sleek and intuitive digital interface provides real-time temperature and mode information, enhancing usability.

Walton's voice-activated controls allow users to operate the AC in both Bangla and English without internet and remote dependency – an industry-first feature in Bangladesh. The Bluetooth control technology enables remote operation via Bluetooth, providing seamless control even without Wi-Fi or mobile data.

These ACs have the "AI doctor", an intelligent diagnostic system that monitors AC performance, detects issues and provides maintenance alerts to ensure longevity and efficiency.

Moreover, the Coatec Technology of Walton ACs provides ultimate armor that defies corrosion. It secures air conditioners against rust corrosion and damage while elevating the ACs' durability to unmatched levels, ensuring peak performance year after year.

What is the difference between inverter and non-inverter ACs?

Inverter ACs adjust compressor speed for consistent cooling, lower electricity bills and quieter operation. Though the initial cost is higher, it offers 30%-50% energy savings and a longer lifespan. On the other hand, non-inverter ACs run at a fixed speed, turning on and off frequently, leading to higher energy consumption, temperature fluctuations and more noise. It has a lower upfront cost but higher long-term expenses.

What aspects of customer satisfaction has your company considered when introducing these ACs? Could you tell us about the after-sales service of Walton ACs?

Walton prioritises customer satisfaction by incorporating cutting-edge technology, energy efficiency and user-friendly features in its air conditioners. These high-tech ACs are offered at competitive prices, making them accessible to a wide range of customers. Beyond selling air conditioners, Walton prioritises customer satisfaction through exceptional after-sales services and exciting benefits.

Exclusive offers include up to a 25% discount under the Exchange Offer for upgrading to a new Walton AC. The Mosjid Offer provides customers with a free angle and an additional one-year service warranty. Walton also runs engaging digital campaigns where participants have the chance to become millionaires. To make purchasing more convenient, Walton offers easy instalment plans, including 0% interest EMI and Easy Kisti (instalment) facilities, ensuring affordability for all customers.

Walton offers unmatched service benefits, setting a new standard in the Bangladeshi air conditioner market. It is the only AC brand in the country to provide a 1-year replacement guarantee. Additionally, Walton backs its products with a 10-year compressor warranty, guaranteeing long-term durability and reliable performance. Selected models come with a 5-year PCB warranty, further enhancing reliability and efficiency.

To ensure comprehensive support, Walton also provides a 3-year spare parts warranty and 1-year after-sales service, which includes a free cleaning service for better maintenance.

With nationwide service centres, 24/7 customer support, and industry-leading warranties, Walton ensures that customers get the best value, service, and peace of mind with their air conditioners.

What is the current status of government policy support for the development of the AC manufacturing industry?

The current government policy for the domestic AC industry should continue as this sector is yet in the developing stages. We hope that the government will take all necessary steps and provide suitable policy support so that the sector becomes sustainable. This will bring about more economic and overall development of the country.
