A consignment of 26,250 tonnes of Atap rice, imported under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement with Pakistan, has arrived at Chattogram port.
The St. Vincent Grenadines-flagged vessel, MV Mariam, departed from Qasim Port in Pakistan on 27 February and reached Chattogram yesterday (14 March).
According to a press release issued by Imdad Islam, public relations officer of the food ministry, sample testing of the rice was conducted on board, and the unloading process has begun.
The rice shipment is part of the G2G agreement signed on 31 January between Bangladesh and Pakistan, the release said.
This marks the second batch of rice arriving from Pakistan this month. Earlier on 5 March, a vessel named MV Sibi reached Chattogram port, also carrying 26,250 tonnes of rice.
Ali Akbar, CEO of Seven Seas Shipping Line, the local shipping agent for the Ministry of Food's rice imports, confirmed that the MV Mariam has been berthed at the Grain Silo Jetty for unloading.
