Students at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) barred a Chhatra League activist from attending classes today (11 March) and later handed him over to the police.

Nur Md Bayezid, a fourth-year student in the university's Mathematics department, was a candidate for the post of general secretary of BCL's SUST unit.

According to students, Bayezid was initially active in the quota reform movement during the July uprising but later misrepresented the movement in the media, labelling it as anti-government.

Hafizur Rahman, member secretary of Students Against Discrimination (SAD) at SUST, said, "We held him and handed him over to the police. He betrayed the movement, creating confusion in the media that nearly cost us our lives. This ultimately led to the Chhatra League's attack on us during which one of our fellow protesters was killed on 18 July, and many others were injured."

Rahman added that there are multiple cases against Bayezid for his stance against the July movement, and they expect legal action to follow.

Contacted, Jalalabad Police Station OC Harunur Rashid said, "Upon receiving information, our team arrived at the scene and took him into custody. Legal action will be taken after consulting university authorities and reviewing the evidence [against Bayezid]."

University Proctor Professor Md Mokhlesur Rahman said, "We were informed that students held someone. Assistant proctors were sent to the scene, and in coordination with the students, the individual was handed over to the police."
