'Plastic exchange corner' launched in Ctg to combat pollution

In an effort to tackle plastic pollution and urban waterlogging, Clean Bangladesh launched a "plastic exchange corner" in Chattogram this morning (7 March).
This initiative, organised by Clean Bangladesh with support from Chattogram City Corporation, allows residents to exchange used plastic and polythene for essential goods during the month of Ramadan.
The inauguration ceremony took place in front of Chawk Bazar wholesale market, with Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Shahadat Hossain attending as the chief guest.
Several social activists, environmentalists, city corporation officials, and local residents were also present at the event.
Speaking at the event, Mayor Shahadat Hossain praised the initiative, emphasising the need for collective action.
"Protecting the environment and solving the waterlogging crisis require joint efforts. Clean Bangladesh's project is commendable as it raises awareness and offers a practical approach to keeping the city clean. We hope this campaign expands further and helps residents understand the dangers of plastic waste," he said.
Shawkat Hossain Jony, founder of Clean Bangladesh, highlighted the growing problem of plastic waste in the city.
"One of the major issues in our city is plastic waste and waterlogging. We all know that drains and canals get clogged with plastic, leading to severe flooding even after light rain. We wanted to provide a practical solution that not only protects the environment but also supports underprivileged people. That's why we introduced the concept of 'Bring Plastic, Get Essentials,'" he explained.
The programme will run throughout Ramadan, operating every Friday and Saturday from 10am to 12pm at Chawk Bazar, Bahaddarhat, and Agrabad wholesale markets.
Residents can exchange plastic waste for essential items such as chickpeas, lentils, dates, flattened rice, potatoes, onions, and eggs.
The initiative is being successfully managed by Clean Bangladesh's General Secretary Tanvir Risat, with a team led by Imon, Alvi, Zahid, Promi, and Tanzifa. Additional team members include Sakib, Yaj, Muntasir, and Partha.
Clean Bangladesh hopes this initiative will raise awareness among residents about the harmful effects of plastic waste and encourage environmentally friendly habits.
