The Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of BNP, has expelled its Jashore Government City College unit leader, who was recently arrested for reportedly punching an on-duty traffic policeman and breaking his nose.

Shaon Islam Sabuj, general secretary of Jashore Government City College Chhatra Dal, has been expelled for "violating party organisational discipline", reads a press release, signed by Chhatra Dal Central Office Secretary Jahangir Alam, yesterday (3 March) night.

Chhatra Dal also instructed all its leaders and activists not to have any kind of organisational contact with expelled Shaon Islam Sabuj.

On 1 March, police arrested Sabuj on charges of assaulting a traffic policeman at the Doratana Hospital intersection in Jashore city. He is currently in jail.

According to media reports, traffic policeman Shariful Islam was on duty at the intersection when Chhatra Dal leader Sabuj was standing on the road with a motorcycle. As traffic congestion arose on the road, the policeman asked Sabuj to move the motorcycle. A heated argument ensued and at one point Sabuj punched the policeman in the face, breaking his nose.

Speaking to The Business Standard today, District Chhatra Dal President Rajedur Rahman Sagar said, "We are embarrassed by this incident. The organisation will not take responsibility for the individual."

He also said, "Chhatra Dal is a disciplined party. Chhatra Dal leaders and activists should learn from this expulsion; if they create any chaos, they will have no place in the organisation."
