Bogura court chaos: Ex-Sramik League leader Tufan in women's lockup sparks outrage

Former Sramik League leader and rape case accused Tufan Sarkar was placed in the women's lockup at the Bogura Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court today (3 March), triggering outrage in the court premises.

The incident, which unfolded in the afternoon, immediately drew intense scrutiny, with a large contingent of police officers and media personnel gathering on the court's second floor. 

According to police, Tufan Sarkar was brought to court for a hearing related to an Electricity Court case. Following which, he was placed in the women's lockup section of the court. His wife, mother-in-law, and a legal assistant were also present in this area.

News of this unusual placement quickly spread, causing significant disruption within the court premises. 

By approximately 4pm, senior police officials, including the chief judicial magistrate, arrived to assess the situation and address the growing concern.

Bogura Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Hossain Muhammad Raihan said keeping a male accused in the women's lockup is a serious violation of protocol. 

He assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted, and appropriate action would be taken against those responsible.

In 2017, Tufan Sarkar was accused of raping a college student in Bogura. The aftermath of this alleged crime was particularly disturbing, as the heads of the student's mother and daughter were forcibly shaved by Tufan's wife and relatives, an act that sparked widespread national outrage. 

The student's mother subsequently filed a formal rape case against Tufan.

Later, Tufan Sarkar also faced several other criminal charges, including accusations of murder. 

He was recently arrested in connection with another murder case and has remained in jail since then.
