An air-conditioned (AC) bus service has been reintroduced on a trial basis under Dhaka Nagar Paribahan's Green Cluster route.

The service was launched today (24 February) on Route No 21 (amended) as part of efforts to modernise and streamline Dhaka's public transport system.

Senior Secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division, Ehsanul Hoque, inaugurated the service at an event organised by the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA).

The Green Cluster buses will operate from Ghatarchar in Keraniganj and cover key destinations, including Bosila, Shahbagh, Kakrail, Mohakhali, Shapla Chattar, Gulistan, Postogola, Abdullahpur, Khilgaon-Taltola, Banasree, and Demra's Staff Quarter in Dhaka, extending to Bhulta and Meghna Ghat in Narayanganj.

Speaking at the inauguration, Ehsanul Hoque said, "Public transport is the backbone of a city. It is crucial not only for passengers but also for the economic and social development of the city. In the past few years, Dhaka's public transport system has faced various problems—traffic congestion, old buses, mismanagement, and passenger suffering were a daily reality.

"To address this, we have taken the initiative to build a modern and sustainable public transport system through Dhaka Nagar Paribahan. The launch of the AC bus service on Route No 21 is part of that goal."

He added, "The buses operating on this route will be state-of-the-art, comfortable, and passenger-friendly. A safe and comfortable travel experience will be ensured, and we hope this service will gain popularity, encouraging more people to use public transport."

The event was attended by officials from BRTA, BRTC, RAJUK, the Roads and Highways Department, Highway Police, and Dhaka North and South City Corporations, along with representatives from transport owners' associations, labour federations, passengers, students, and journalists from print and electronic media.

Notably, the decision to introduce bus routes under the Green Cluster was taken at a meeting on 19 December regarding improvements in the road transport sector.

Following this, the DTCA, under the guidance of the Road Transport and Highways Division, has been implementing necessary measures through the Bus Route Rationalisation Committee.
