48-hr sit-in for implementation of Teesta treaty begins in Rangpur division
Organisers say the people living near Teesta will unite pressure the interim government to implement the demands and highlight the plight of the Teesta River to the world

People from five districts of the Rangpur division have started a mass movement demanding the implementation of the Teesta Water Sharing Treaty and Teesta Master Plan.
Under the banner of the Teesta River Protection Movement, this programme will be continuously observed for 48 hours from noon (17 February) at 11 points along the river in Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Nilphamari, Rangpur, and Gaibandha districts, said the organisers.
They believe the people living near Teesta will be united through this movement to put pressure on the interim government to implement the demands and highlight the plight of the Teesta River to the world.
Stages have been set up on the banks of the Teesta River to implement the programme, and slogans are being chanted to demand the fulfilment of their demands.
Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of BNP, is scheduled to virtually join the 11 points in the five districts tomorrow evening (18 February).
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is expected to address a rally on the banks of the Teesta today.
"Leaders and activists of various political parties, including the BNP, are participating in this movement with the slogan 'Wake up, save the Teesta'. The 48-hour continuous protest programme started under the leadership of BNP Organising Secretary Principal Asadul Habib Dulu," said Mohibur Rahman of Rangpur's Gangachara upazila, one of the 11 points.
"Through this movement, we will be able to let the world know that our neighbouring country is not giving us our fair share of water," he added.
