JUST students clash over formation of Student Movement committee

Repeated clashes took place last night (7 February) between members of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement and students of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) over the formation of a committee of the student platform at Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST).

The clashes began at 9pm yesterday and continued until 12:30am today (8 February).

At least eight people were injured in the several rounds of clashes, during which students threw brickbats. They all received treatment at Jashore General Hospital.

Police and university sources said preparations were underway for a while now to form a campus committee of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement. However, a section of students does not want any committee.

There has been tension on campus over the issue for the past two days.

Around 9pm last night, a few students had a verbal altercation at a tea shop in front of the university's main gate over the matter.

Later, when students involved with the Anti-discrimination Student Movement went to the proctor's office to resolve the matter, the agitated students of the CSE department reportedly attacked them, and the two sides clashed, witnesses said.

Both sides continued to throw bricks and stones at each other during the clashes on campus. The situation came under control after JUST Vice-Chancellor Prof Abdul Majid and law enforcement forces arrived.
