Beximco Group has announced the decision to discontinue production and sack employees at four more factories at Beximco Industrial Park in Gazipur.

The four closed factories are yarn unit-2, textile, denim and knitting sections of the Industrial Park, which are based in Sarabo area under Gazipur's Kashimpur police station.

The decision of factory closure was conveyed by the authorities through a notice at the entrances of the factories last evening (4 February).

Beximco authorities also disclosed the information on Dhaka Stock Exchange website this morning (5 February).

Contacted, AKM Johirul Islam, superintendent of Gazipur Industrial Police-2, said, "Beximco Group has announced closure for its four factories. No employee came to the factories in the morning. Members of industrial police have been deployed in the area."

"The workers of these factories did not show any negative reactions. They have accepted the decision. However, they have requested for quick payment of their dues," the SP said.

Beximco Industrial Park, owned by Salman F Rahman, the former private industries adviser to ex-prime minister Sheikh Hasina, saw the closure of 16 factories since 15 December due to not receiving any export orders and not being able to open letters of credit to import raw materials.

In the notice, Beximco authorities said the advisory committee formed by the government to review the labour and business situation of the group held a meeting on 15 December, where a decision was taken to announce lay-offs at the four factories following the related sections of Bangladesh Labour Law, 2006.

The decision will be effective from 5 February. The employees of these factories will receive compensation according to laws, and they do not need to provide attendance in person as long as the lay-off is effective, the notice reads.

Although the closure was announced last evening, employees became aware of it this morning.

However, the situation around the Industrial Park remains calm as of filing of this report, with law enforcement agencies deployed in the area.
