Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan said that the necessary work for the people of Chattogram has not been done during the Awami League government.

He said, "For many years, no attention has been given to the rivers, canals, and the water stagnation inside the Chattogram city. There have been widespread complaints. Every year, Chattogram city has gone underwater. We are trying to restore the drainage systems within the city, ensuring the water can flow properly into the sea and rivers."

He made these remarks yesterday after visiting the canal excavation work at Bahaddarhat Baraipara and Sholoshahar Sunnia Madrasa in the port city.

The adviser said, "These things won't happen overnight. We have started the work so that we can reduce water stagnation as much as possible during the monsoon. We are working to ensure that by the next monsoon, the drainage system is functional enough to allow water to flow away properly. Our goal is to prevent the situation from being as bad as before and to minimise water stagnation this time."

At that time, Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Shahadat Hossain briefed the adviser on the progress of the canal excavation work.

He said, "If everyone works together in a coordinated manner, we hope to relieve city residents from water stagnation. Previously, there was no coordination. Now, we are working in collaboration with all service-providing agencies. We expect to see results. This season, we might achieve 40% to 50% of our goal. It will take another year to reach 100% success."

During the visit, Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Md Ziauddin, CDA Chairman Engineer Nurul Karim, and senior officials from various organisations were present.

Earlier on 19 January, three advisers from the high-level monitoring team formed by the interim government—Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, and Faruq-e-Azam—announced an 11-point action plan to be implemented before the next monsoon while reviewing the progress of Chattogram city's water stagnation mitigation project. The deadline for implementing the action plan has been set until May.
