Samsung and Google introduce Android XR headset to challenge Vision Pro

Samsung's January Unpacked event did not just bring us the sleek Galaxy S25 series, it also gave us a sneak peek at something far more futuristic: an Android XR headset, codenamed Project Moohan. 

While attendees at the event were not allowed to try it out, tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee (MKBHD) has recently shared a hands-on video of the prototype, which is the first real glimpse of what Samsung's XR ambitions look like in action.

This is not the first time we have heard about Samsung's XR headset. The company teased the device back in December 2024 when Google announced its Android XR software. But Marques' video marks the first time anyone outside Samsung has actually used it. He describes the headset as "a Nexus or Pixel, but for headsets," highlighting its potential to set a standard in the fragmented XR market.

Visually, the headset bears a striking resemblance to Apple's Vision Pro, with a large reflective glass front and a light fabric design. However, it has its own unique touches, like a touchpad on the right strap and a USB-C-connected battery pack. The device supports eye and hand tracking, allowing users to control the interface with gestures, and it even integrates Google's Gemini AI for contextual assistance.

Marques' demo also showcased the Android XR interface, which feels like a mixed-reality version of Android. Users can open multiple apps, adjust window sizes, and access the Google Play Store. One standout feature is Circle to Search, which lets users draw around real-world objects for instant AI-powered information.

While pricing and availability remain under wraps, Samsung confirmed the headset will launch later this year. For now, it is clear Samsung is aiming to make a big splash in the XR space.
