Chhatra Sangbad apologies, withdraws article on Liberation War amid backlash

Chhatra Sangbad, a monthly publication of Islami Chhatrashibir, has apologised for an article on Liberation War published in its December issue which sparked severe criticism from netizens.  

In a statement issued today (29 December), Chhatra Sangbad said the article was published by mistake. 

"Traditionally Chhatra Sangbad publishes articles by various writers on the glorious Liberation War of Bangladesh. The newspaper also has a long-standing tradition of publishing special issues commemorating Independence Day and Victory Day. In keeping with this tradition, several articles on the Liberation War were featured in the December 24th issue," it said in a statement today (29 January).

"Due to an unintentional mistake by the editorial staff, a few controversial and inappropriate lines were included in an article titled "Autocracy in the era and their tragic consequences," reads the statement.

It further said, "Chhatra Sangbad sincerely apologises for the publication of this article, which contains content that is detrimental to the spirit of the Liberation War. The publication hereby withdraws this controversial article from its online platform and is recalling all print copies of the 24 December issue."

Regarding Islami Chhatrashibir, Chhatra Sangbad states that Shibir has always held the Liberation War in the highest esteem. 

"Since its inception in 1977, Chhatrashibir has consistently played a pivotal role in all mass movements aimed at safeguarding the nation's independence, making significant sacrifices. Chhatrashibir remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting the country's independence and sovereignty and will continue to do so in the future," said the statement.
