A young man has been arrested over raping a 10-year-old flower seller under the Shahbagh Metro Station in Dhaka on Wednesday (15 January) night.

The incident occurred around 8pm near the Birdem Hospital.   

Police rescued the victim in a bloody condition from under the station and later admitted her to the One-Stop Crisis Centre (OCC) at the DMC Hospital.

Another street child, Mobarak, told the media, "People gathered after hearing the child's screams from under the metro station. When I went there, I saw her lying there in a bloody condition. And people had caught the boy." 

Md Tarekul Islam, Inspector (Investigation) of Ramna police station told The Business Standard, "We received information at night and rescued a street child who had been raped from under the metro station. A young man named Raihan, 19, has been arrested in this incident. The child has been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital." 

He said Raihan had taken the child to a makeshift hut under the metro station and raped her.  "People rushed forward after hearing the child's screams and apprehended Raihan," he added.
