Time will tell if Awami League can contest upcoming election: CEC

Time will tell whether the Awami League's registration will remain intact and if the party will participate in the upcoming election, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin said today (11 January) in Sylhet.

"When the time comes, it will be clear which parties retain their registration. Whether the Awami League can participate in the election will also become evident in due course," he told journalists after a meeting on voter list updates and preparations for the 13th national election at the Sylhet Circuit House.

Nasir said that he does not wish to comment on the prospects of holding all local government elections simultaneously. "Some have suggested holding all elections on a single day, but that is simply not feasible," he said.

Regarding the upcoming national election, he clarified that the Election Commission will not use electronic voting machines (EVMs).

He added, "We are working to hold the election within the timeframe set by the chief adviser, following specific guidelines. This time, expatriates will also have the opportunity to participate in the election."

"Whether the Awami League maintains its registration and takes part in the election depends on time. The Election Commission is actively addressing this issue," the CEC said.

Earlier, he held a discussion with Election Commission officials, administration representatives, and members of law enforcement agencies on updating the voter list and preparations for the upcoming national parliamentary election.

On 30 December, CEC Nasir said Awami League will be able to participate in the next national election if the current government or court does not ban it.

His comments came at a time when the students who led the mass uprising and various quarters, including some political parties, have been demanding that AL be banned as a fascist political party.
