A conspiracy is underway to hinder the spirit of unity that had formed among the masses during the July-August uprising, Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar said today (10 January).

"My plea to those who were on the streets during the movement is that in the light of the spirit of the July uprising, let's create an environment of national unity and make whatever reforms are needed for an acceptable election," he said at a workers' conference of the the party's Gazipur district branch in Sadar upazila this morning.

The Jamaat leader also said the country has passed through a dark era in the last 18 years.

"During the past fascist period, there was looting of the economy, there was no justice in the judiciary, Sheikh Hasina and her family captured all governing power and destroyed everything in business and commerce," he added.

Alleging that ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina is conspiring against the country after fleeing to India, he said, "India has violated the Geneva Convention and all international laws by sheltering a murderer. So we are forced to say that they [India] were also behind all these years of oppression, torture, looting, and murder."
