Punitive action has been taken against 71 students of the Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) who were involved in the murder of July martyr Abu Sayed, the university's Vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Md Showkat Ali announced yesterday (5 January).

He said the Begum Rokeya University Central Students' Union (BRUCSU) elections will be organised before any other elections in this university.

Until further orders, all types of elections of the teachers-officers-employees' associations or unions in BRUR will remain suspended, said Showkat.

He also said that various decisions in this regard have been taken in the wake of discussions with the leaders of the teachers, officers and employees' organisations on Saturday night (3 January).

VC Showkat disclosed the information while briefing journalists after the 109th syndicate meeting of the university held at the administrative building yesterday.

He said that 71 students of the university involved in opposing and attacking the students' quota reform movement in July last year have been brought under punishment for various terms on the recommendation of the disciplinary committee.

"Of them, legal action has been taken against 15 students whose studentship has ended, 33 have been expelled for two semesters and 23 have been expelled for one semester," he said.

Besides, nine teachers, officials and employees involved in the same incident, along with the former proctor arrested by the police, have already been suspended.

"Further action will be taken against them as per the Government Servants Discipline and Appeal Rules 2018 for not responding to the show cause letter," the VC added.

He said that the constitution for the BRUCSU elections had been approved in the syndicate meeting. "In light of the said constitution, the roadmap for the BRUCSU and different hall union elections will be announced after discussing with various stakeholders including students."

He also said that the administration is always vigilant to ensure that no untoward incident takes place on the campus of martyr Abu Sayed's university.

"As per the decision of the previous syndicate meeting, student politics will remain suspended on the campus until further order," he said.
