IUB clinches men’s and women’s doubles titles at EWU badminton tournament

The badminton team of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), has clinched the championship trophies in both men's and women's doubles categories in the SMC+ East West Winter Smash Badminton Competition.

Held from December 22-26, 2024, at East West University in Dhaka, the IUB team competed against more than 40 universities, securing final spots in four out of six events.

Tipu Sultan from the Department of Human Resource Management and Ashfak Bin Ferdous from the Department of English and Modern Languages won the Men's Doubles title with a 2-0 margin against Hazi Misir Ali College in the final. In the group stage, they defeated teams from BRAC University, Southeast University, Jahangirnagar University, and Bangladesh Army University of Engineering and Technology in straight sets. In the second round, they toppled Team IUB 3, American International University Bangladesh in the quarterfinals, and North South University in the semi-finals.

In the Women's Doubles category, Tasnim Noor from the Department of Accounting and Kazi Kayanat Soha from the Department of General Management defeated Team East West University 3 in the final with a 2-0 margin. They beat Team East West University 3 and Maritime University in the group stage, followed by quarter-final and semi-final wins against Daffodil International University and Team East West University 2, respectively.

In Men's Singles, Ashfak finished as the runner-up after a closely contested 2-1 match against Daffodil International University in the final. He advanced through the group stage with straight-set victories over European University, Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College, and Team North South University 1, followed by a second-round win against Team BRAC University 1, a walkover in the quarterfinals, and a semi-final victory against North South University.

In Mixed Doubles, Tipu Sultan and Tasnim finished as runners-up after a 2-0 loss to Daffodil International University in the final. Their earlier matches included group-stage wins against Daffodil International University, Team East West University 1, and Stamford University, followed by quarter-final and semi-final victories against East-West University and North South University.

East West University organised the competition in collaboration with the Bangladesh Badminton Federation. The Division of Student Activities (DoSA) supported the IUB team's success, with Junior Officer Nur Mohammad Farhad and 24th Convocation Sports Awardee Tanin Rahman Tushar coordinating the team as managers and coaches.
