An 18-year-old was injured in a gunshot during New Year's celebration in Dhamrai upazila of Dhaka district today (1 January).

The youth, Akash Sarkar, was taken to Enam Medical College Hospital with a gunshot wound at around 1am and is undergoing treatment at the ICU, the hospital's in-charge Md Yusuf told The Business Standard.

According to police, some youths organised a 'Khichuri' party at a house in Rowail village of the upazila to welcome the New Year.

Several youths were present there and one of them had a firearm. An argument broke out over eating Khichuri and at one point, a bullet hit Akash in the chest, they said.

Dhamrai Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Monirul Islam told TBS that the police are investigating the matter, although no written complaint has been filed by the injured youth's family yet.

"Efforts are being made to identify those responsible for the incident and bring them to justice," he added.

However, the police have not yet been able to confirm who exactly had the firearm. The police have also not been able to confirm whether someone shot Akash intentionally or if the incident occurred due to a misfire.

Akash's father Pratul Sarkar alleged that a young man named Rabbi Khan fired the shot.
