A political movement is necessary to ensure people with disabilities are represented in parliament so they can speak for themselves, Shipping, Labour and Employment Adviser Brig Gen (retd) M Sakhawat Hussain has said.

Joining as chief guest at the day-long national conference by the BRAC Bank titled "EmpowerAbility: Powering Every Ability" in the capital today (11 December), he said it was high time to have reserved seats in parliament for people with disabilities.

Noting that Bangladesh is yet to introduce a public transport system for people with disabilities, he said, "This has been a demand for a long, long time. Therefore, I would request the private entrepreneurs, as well as the government public transport system, to look into this."

The adviser also touched upon different labour-related issues plaguing various sectors.

He said the problems were being resolved day to day instead of looking ahead to see what can be done next.

"Let us pledge today that we work together both in the private and the public sector. Wherever possible, we would accommodate everyone so that everyone's contribution is towards furthering the economy and the betterment of the country."

BRAC Bank has initiated the day-long national conference in collaboration with the Bangladesh Business and Disability Network to promote the inclusion and empowerment of persons with disabilities.

The event began at the Bangladesh International Conference Centre and was supported by the International Labour Organisation and the German development agency GIZ.
