The Rumour Scanner has checked the photo of an elderly man picking up leftovers from a garbage dump on a sidewalk in Bangladesh that has recently gone viral on social media.

The fact checking body, in an investigation, found that it is not a recent photo rather it was clicked in 2023. It also said the viral photo is misleading.

The Rumour Scanner published the report on its website yesterday, saying the photo is being posted with the captions 'Bangladesh's Famine' and 'Bangladesh's status', claiming that it is a recent photo of Bangladesh.

The investigation shows that the same photo was posted on the Facebook page of photographer GMB Akash on Sunday (8 December), which was also shared on his Instagram account.

Akash mentioned in the caption of the posts that the photo was taken on 17 November 2023.

However, questions have also been raised about the authenticity of the photo. Some claimed that it was created using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. In this context, the Rumour Scanner team contacted photographer GMB Akash and collected the original photo.

Metadata analysis of the original photo confirmed that the photo is authentic and was taken in 2023.

"So, an old photo of an elderly man taking leftovers has been circulated on social media claiming that it is a recent photo which is misleading," the fact check body said in its report.
