Chancellor Angela Merkel regrets that her protegee, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, has decided not to run for chancellor in Germany's federal election next year, a participant at a meeting of their Christian Democrat (CDU) party leadership said.
A source in Merkel's CDU, of which Kramp-Karrenbauer is leader, said earlier on Monday that Kramp-Karrenbauer would not run for chancellor in 2021.
