Scripts are sets of graphic characters used to write a language. A total of 293 scripts are known worldwide, of which more than 156 remain in use today. The current form of the Bangla alphabet first appeared in 1778, when Charles Wilkins introduced Bangla printing, and a few archaic letters were modernised during the nineteenth century.
