Blue carbon sinks are coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, seagrass and salt marshes that store large amounts of atmospheric carbon. The Unesco marine world heritage sites, recognised for their global value, together hold about 1.4 billion tonnes of carbon and serve as a vital climate buffer.
