Home Minister Salahuddin calls for increased Chinese investment in Bangladesh
The minister described China and Bangladesh as long-standing and trusted friends.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has called on Chinese investors to increase their presence in Bangladesh, highlighting the role of security and stability in attracting foreign capital.
He made the call when Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen met him at his office at the Ministry of Home Affairs in the Bangladesh Secretariat this afternoon (25 February).
During the meeting, the minister described China and Bangladesh as long-standing and trusted friends. Considering regional, strategic and geographical factors, he said Bangladesh wants to take bilateral relations to a new level.
He noted that China is one of Bangladesh's largest development partners, having invested in many major projects, and requested the ambassador to further increase investment in the near future.
Emphasising that development and security are interlinked, Salahuddin stressed the importance of strengthening law and order to facilitate increased investment, noting that maintaining law and order and stability is the government's top priority under its electoral mandate.
In response, the ambassador said a politically stable government has now been established in Bangladesh, which would encourage the Chinese government to expand investment.
Ambassador Yao added that around 10,000 Chinese nationals are currently working across various sectors in Bangladesh.
The ambassador also requested Bangladesh to join the "International Alliance Combating Telecom and Cyber Fraud," an initiative of China's Ministry of Public Security, and said a proposal has already been sent through the appropriate channels.
The meeting discussed cooperation in security, law enforcement, cybercrime prevention, police training, trade and business expansion, and strengthening bilateral relations, along with other issues of mutual interest.
