Recruiters are Googling you: Why your digital footprint matters more than you think

A CV showcases your qualifications, experience, and achievements, but it might not fully reveal how you communicate, exercise judgment, or connect with others. Some recruiters look beyond the document to a candidate's publicly available digital footprint. What they find may reinforce the claims in a CV or raise questions that are hard to ignore.

The practice is not uncommon. A 2024 systematic review of research on social media assessments in personnel selection reports that approximately two out of three recruiters in the underlying research said they assessed candidates' skills, abilities or hireability through social media. Although this is not a Bangladesh-specific statistic, it illustrates how online information has entered recruitment practices.

More direct evidence comes from a 2025 experimental study published in Frontiers in Psychology. Researchers presented CVs and manipulated social media profiles to 480 managers and HR specialists authorised to recruit for hotels in Türkiye. Negative online content reduced hiring intentions, even for highly qualified candidates, while professional content improved perceptions of candidates' suitability.

These findings matter to job seekers in Bangladesh, too. A recruiter searching for a candidate's name may find a LinkedIn profile, public Facebook posts, comments on news articles, photographs, or professional contributions. Together, these fragments can shape an impression long before a candidate enters the interview room.

Your CV tells employers what you have done; your digital footprint can influence what they think of you.

The answer is not to turn social media into a carefully orchestrated exhibition of professional success. A credible digital presence stems from consistency between what we claim and how we conduct ourselves online.

For young professionals, LinkedIn offers an opportunity to demonstrate expertise beyond degrees and job titles. Sharing informed industry insights, discussing a professional challenge, recognising a colleague's contribution, or explaining a lesson learned from a project can showcase curiosity and communication skills. The goal is not to post constantly, but to contribute something meaningful and accurate.

The risks of neglecting one's digital footprint are equally real. An angry exchange, a discriminatory remark, an unverified allegation, or a public attack on a former employer can raise questions about judgement and professionalism. A post shared in frustration may remain accessible long after the emotion has passed. Even a legitimate grievance can be undermined by the way it is expressed.

However, professionalism should not be confused with silence. People have every right to hold opinions, question authority and participate in public debate. The ability to disagree constructively is valuable in any workplace. A responsible digital presence does not require universal agreement; it requires distinguishing fact from rumour, respecting others and expressing criticism without resorting to abuse.

However, there is an important caveat. A digital footprint is not a reliable measure of a person's overall character or competence. The 2024 systematic review examined 12 studies involving 536 raters and 2,019 people assessed. It found that raters' assessments were largely unreliable and that their relationship with job-related outcomes was small or close to zero. Online screening can therefore produce misleading impressions due to mistaken identities, outdated material, missing context, or irrelevant personal information.

Responsibility rests with both employers and candidates. Recruiters should focus on job-relevant information, apply consistent standards, and give applicants a fair opportunity to clarify potentially damaging material. An isolated post should not outweigh demonstrated competence, and personal beliefs or private circumstances should not serve as proxies for professional suitability.

For job seekers, a simple digital audit is a sensible starting point. Search for your name online and review the public profiles, photographs, comments and posts that appear. Check whether your professional profiles accurately reflect your experience and expertise. Review your privacy settings and remove any material you no longer wish to be public, where possible, remembering that deleting a post does not guarantee that every copy will disappear.

Universities and career counsellors should also integrate digital professionalism into employability training. Preparing for work involves more than writing a CV and rehearsing interview answers; it also means learning to communicate responsibly in spaces where personal expression and professional reputation increasingly overlap.

A digital footprint should not become a permanent trial in which every post is judged without context. But we also cannot assume that what we publish publicly has no consequences beyond the moment of posting. A strong CV may secure an interview, while a thoughtful digital presence can reinforce its credibility. In a connected world, career development means paying attention not only to the story we tell recruiters, but also to the evidence we leave for them to discover.
