Beyond Jeans and T-Shirts: Effortless style from tropics to tundra
Packing for a trip is more than just filling a suitcase; it’s your chance to experiment, express and elevate your everyday style
With the holiday season fast approaching, it is time to shelve your favourite jeans and graphic T-shirt combo. A vacation is the perfect excuse to experiment with your wardrobe — so when you look back at those photos later, you will admire your style rather than mistake your outfit for something you would wear on an ordinary day at home.
Musician and fashion enthusiast Tajwar Ul Islam loves experimenting with fabrics, cuts and prints. "Tropical countries mean hot or humid weather, so Cuban shirts are a must — they let me show off my neck pieces, maybe a pearl necklace or some chains. Full pants and baggy, because I like them loose now. Colours depend on the shirt and vice versa," shared Tajwar.
Accessories are non-negotiable for Tajwar. A tote bag or a fanny pack in different colours often completes his look. "Colder climates mean layers — T-shirts, sweaters, cardigans, jackets, overcoats, you name it. Accessories include beanies, gloves, scarves," he added.

For footwear, Tajwar's reliable choices are black Dr Martens platform boots or white chunky trainers, which, according to him, "go with just about everything".
While Tajwar leans towards statement looks, others prefer a more relaxed, functional wardrobe when travelling.
Model and musician Gemini Sol favours comfort and practicality.
"For bottoms, I'd pick slacks, trousers, maybe a few jersey shorts. I always prefer a relaxed, loose fit – all in breathable fabrics. It's hard to find pure cotton these days, but as long as it's comfortable, I'm happy," he said.
When it comes to footwear, Gemini goes for sneakers, penny loafers, and sometimes boots if it's muddy.
"On top, I'd definitely pack a few of my cotton fatuas – they're extremely comfortable and perfect for lazy fit days. Another staple is a pack of ribbed white tank tops. They go with everything and fit my style perfectly," he added.
Accessories are an essential part of Gemini's look, no matter the climate.
"I always carry a few of my bandanas — they help cover my hair from pollution and the harsh sun. And of course, my sling bag for the essentials," he said.
When travelling to colder regions, Gemini makes sure to pack plenty of outerwear.
He suggests packing a lot of jackets: windbreakers, puffers, pullovers, leather, everything in between. Gemini carries one from each category, along with a good sports jacket for casual wear. He also includes cashmere sweaters and pullovers, depending on how cold the destination is.
"For bottoms, I go for thick jeans and a few pairs of slacks, layering with inners if needed. My clothes always have a flowy, loose silhouette — I've got very long legs, so it just works," said the model.
Gemini's go-to footwear for winter includes Chelsea boots, New Balance 550s, and black lace-up boots.
For those who prefer to keep it simple, especially in tropical countries, breathable fabrics like cotton, khadi, and linen are your best options.
Think neutral tones, white linen shirts, and relaxed silhouettes – that effortless southern France vibe. Add playful prints like gingham or ikat to bring some colour and texture into the mix.
Like model Sukanan Chakma, who swears by comfort with a touch of personality.
"My go-to pieces would be linen shirts — maybe a Cuban collar for a change — flowy trousers or tailored shorts, and simple sandals. Lately, I've found flip-flops quite chic. If I'm heading to the beach, a raffia tote or woven bag is a staple! I like relaxed, comfortable outfits, but I always have fun with them," said Sukanan.
When packing for colder destinations, Sukanan leans into earthy, timeless tones.
"I tend to wear bottle green in winter — deep browns, maroons, lots of black. Mainly colours that feel cosy and classic," he added.
A trench coat is a staple in his wardrobe, along with leather or suede jackets, wool trousers, gloves, and mufflers.
"I like experimenting with hats and boots — I've got a small collection that I love mixing into my outfits. A good oversized hoodie is great too — comfortable but stylish. For me, winter dressing is all about layers that feel effortless yet chic," he said.
When it comes to styling, balance is key. Start by building around one statement piece — a bold printed shirt, an oversized jacket, or even a textured pair of trousers — and keep the rest of your outfit simple to let that item shine.
Fit matters just as much as fabric; even the most expensive clothes can look careless if they don't sit right. Mixing structured pieces with relaxed fits adds interest without feeling overdone — for instance, pair wide-leg trousers with a fitted shirt, or layer a loose cardigan over a crisp t-shirt.
Accessories are what pull a look together, so don't shy away from small details like rings, scarves or a good watch.
Footwear brings the look together; sandals or loafers for easy days, boots for a more rugged look.
