"Scent is the 'fifth layer' of interior design—a finishing touch that completes a home's atmosphere. Just as lighting influences mood and textures create warmth, fragrance has the power to make a space feel calm, inviting or energising," said interior designer Tasnim Kabir Turji.
As homeowners become more intentional about creating personalised living spaces, home fragrances have evolved from luxury accessories into an integral part of everyday design. But with room sprays, scented candles, reed diffusers and incense all offering different experiences, how do you decide which one belongs in your home?
Md Jahangir Alam, owner of JS International, imports room freshener sprays, reed diffusers and battery-operated spray machines. According to him, different spaces require different fragrances.
"Hospitals prefer citrusy scents such as tangerine, while banks and financial institutions prefer fresh, welcoming fragrances with notes of aqua, green tea or eucalyptus. Club owners tend to favour woody, earthy notes that evoke a sense of adventure, while hotels and restaurants prefer warm, cosy fragrances with chocolate, vanilla and other bakery notes," Alam said.
According to him, most of these businesses and institutions opt for spray bottles rather than reed diffusers or candles.
"Sprays last longer and cover a wider area, whereas reed diffusers and candles are better suited to smaller spaces such as bedrooms and homes," he added.
Candles: Warmth beyond the flame
Few home accessories create ambience quite like a scented candle.
The gentle flicker of a flame instantly softens a room, making candles a favourite for bedrooms, dining tables and cosy reading corners. Beyond fragrance, they introduce a visual warmth that electric lighting cannot easily replicate.
Candles are particularly suited to creating moments rather than providing a permanent fragrance. Lighting one after work or during a quiet evening creates a ritual that encourages people to slow down.
"Candles not only eliminate unpleasant odours but also add fragrance and provide illumination. When you use candles, you set the tone by making the space feel warmer while showing that thought has gone into designing the room. However, given their flammable nature, they should always be placed carefully in safe locations," said interior designer Tasnim Kabir Turji.
Because candles release fragrance more intensely while burning, they work well in medium-sized spaces where people spend time relaxing. However, designers caution against overcrowding a room with multiple scented candles. One carefully chosen fragrance is often enough.
Reed diffusers: Effortless, everyday fragrance
For those who prefer a fragrance that quietly works in the background, reed diffusers are often the most practical choice. Unlike candles, they require neither a flame nor electricity. Fragrance travels gradually through the reeds, creating a consistent scent throughout the day.
This makes them ideal for entrances, bathrooms, home offices and guest rooms. A high-quality reed diffuser will take about an hour to fully release its fragrance and can last for several months, provided the reeds are turned over every week or so. Placing the diffuser near a gentle draught will help the fragrance disperse further.
A diffuser positioned near the front door can create a welcoming first impression, while subtle floral or citrus scents work particularly well in bathrooms.
"Because diffusers continuously release fragrance, they are generally better suited to maintaining ambience than creating dramatic scent moments," said Turji.
Incense: A ritual rooted in tradition
Long before scented candles became popular, incense had been used across Asia and the Middle East for meditation, prayer and relaxation. Today, incense is finding its way into contemporary interiors, appreciated as much for the calming ritual it creates as for its fragrance.
Unlike candles or diffusers, incense creates a more immersive sensory experience. Lighting a single stick often marks the beginning of yoga, meditation, reading or quiet reflection.
Earthy fragrances such as sandalwood, cedarwood, camphor and patchouli remain among the most popular choices.
Because incense smoke can be stronger than other fragrance options, it is often best used in well-ventilated spaces and in moderation.
Matching fragrance to each room
Rather than using one scent throughout the house, many interior stylists recommend creating subtle scent transitions. Fresh citrus or green tea fragrances work well near entrances because they feel clean and uplifting.
Bedrooms benefit from calming notes such as lavender, chamomile and white musk.
Living rooms often suit warmer fragrances such as amber, vanilla or sandalwood, particularly in the evening.
Meanwhile, kitchens usually require lighter fragrances that will not compete with cooking aromas.
Less fragrance, more intention
One of the most common mistakes homeowners make is assuming that a stronger fragrance creates a better atmosphere. In reality, subtlety often feels more luxurious.
Interior designers compare home fragrance to background music—it should enhance the experience without dominating it. Overpowering scents can quickly become overwhelming, particularly in smaller apartments where rooms naturally flow into one another.
There is no single best home fragrance option—only the one that best matches your lifestyle. If you enjoy slow evenings and intimate gatherings, scented candles offer warmth and visual comfort.
If convenience matters most, reed diffusers provide continuous fragrance with little maintenance. If you appreciate rituals and mindfulness, incense creates a deeper sensory experience rooted in tradition.
Many designers even recommend combining all three, using each where it performs best rather than relying on a single format throughout the home.
As Turji puts it, "The most memorable homes are those that engage all the senses. Beautiful furniture may define a room, but fragrance often defines how it is remembered."
