A season of fear: Dengue tightens its deadly grip
Since early September, dengue infections have surged across the country, with hospitals seeing a sharp rise in patients each day and deaths climbing well above previous months.
Data from the Directorate General of Health Services show both cases and fatalities this month far outpacing the same period last year.
While dengue outbreaks are common during the monsoon, this year's wave has taken an alarming turn.
Experts had warned of a severe season, yet critics argue that the government's response has fallen short, lacking the sustained measures needed to curb the crisis.
As of yesterday (19 September), dengue has claimed 167 lives and infected 40,709 people across the country this year, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Currently, 2,016 patients are receiving treatment in various hospitals across the country.
Last year, dengue claimed the lives of 575 people.
