Mesmerising wallpapers

Four walls are not always about keeping us confined within it. There is a lot to experiment with when it comes to put on your walls mood-enhancing, aesthetically pleasing wallpapers. This is essentially connected to our daily existence – what patterns you find soothing and what colour keeps you buoyant.

Home decoration has seen a lot of creativity lately, and a lot of experimentations are being done these days. Nobody likes just a plain wall with no touch of life on them!

In line with one's aesthetic desire, people like to bring into their living space a different sense through references to flowers, patterns and motifs. One should also take colours, styles, patterns and textures into consideration when deciding on wallpapers.

Contrasting or matching colours with the furniture, you can pick wallpaper for different rooms to decorate your place more elegantly to bring a sense of calm to your home. The mix-and-match layering trick where one thing complement the other and some even rely on their contradicting patters, wallpaper too can be bold and obtrusive.

How to use wallpaper

First things first. Decide how you want to decorate the wall, as choices are many. You can cover all four walls and put some interest on the ceiling too. You can keep your game at the minimal level and have patterns on one wall while with the others you may manage to keep things simpler – a monotone to set off our furniture and maybe clusters of photographs and paintings.

Picking style: All about your aesthetic desire

Wallpapers may be considered in relation to styles. You can choose from any of the following:

Formal – it can be a hand-painted print or damask; Glam – embossed, flocked, crystal or glitter embedded or dramatic reflective designs; Casual – designs like plant, floral or textured print; Country – a plaid, gingham or country motif pattern; Rustic – a textured wallpaper, like grass cloth for depth, plaid for warmth or wildlife pattern; Victorian – one like baroque floral damask; and Modern – a geometric or abstract pattern.

Choose your colour

After selecting a particular style, it is time to choose the colour. It hugely depends on the arrangement of the room and its décor like the furniture, curtains and carpet etc. You can select a coloured wallpaper with a pattern that is a few volume lighter, it is more appropriate for bathroom. You can use the accent colour as the main colour to give a dramatic and contrasting vibe. Or, a smooth and easy transition can be created by repeating the wall paint colour as the main wallpaper colour.

A lot more to experiment with:

Glitzy in metallic wallpaper

A shiny metallic wallpaper can be ideal for a room with poor natural light – it reflect the light deeper into the room. A reflective wallpaper can be effective for a small windowless half bath. Faux tin ceiling wallpaper can be perfect for a vintage kitchen or dining room.

Make room look larger or smaller

Wallpaper's pattern and size can make a room appear larger or smaller. A large print with a darker background visually decreases the size of a large room. Conversely, a small patterned wallpaper can make a small room appear larger or a large room appear even larger depending on the colour and pattern.

Make walls appear taller and longer

A wall can appear longer in horizontal stripes while vertical stripes create an illusion of height. You can pick anyone from wide or narrow stripes. Stripes can be irregular, such as vine or paisley patterned.
