How to decorate a bookshelf with more than just books

Bookshelves can serve as both a functional space and a centrepiece of your home design. Unlike the stacks of books in an office or library where all books are arranged from left to right, top to bottom, a bookshelf in the living room will most certainly have a different look.

Balance among large items vs small and bright objects vs dark, are key points to remember to enhance the aesthetics of the space. So here are some tricks to style up bookshelves.

First, start with large objects and groupings to help anchor them to the shelf. Then mix both vertical and horizontal stacks of books for a nicer look.

Next, give books more impact and height by pairing them with decorative objects. This makes the shelves look less like a library and more in coordination with the rest of the room setup.

You can add real or faux greenery for a touch of nature.

Try placing similar items in similar spots when working with multiple bookshelves. Symmetry is a good way to make things look good.
