The Institute of Climate Change, Environment, and Sustainability (ICCES) officially launched at Brac University yesterday (26 October) with an inspirational programme marking International Climate Action Day 2025. The central theme of the launch event was "Youth Engagement for a Sustainable Future".
The event brought together young students, researchers, and prominent national climate experts, placing special emphasis on the critical role of the younger generation in building a climate-resilient Bangladesh.
ICCES announced that it will serve as a knowledge-based platform for research, policy dialogue, and youth-led innovation focused on climate change, the environment, and sustainable development.
Ainun Nishat, professor emeritus at Brac University's Centre for Climate Change and Environmental Research (C3ER), served as the chief guest, formally inaugurating ICCES.
He stressed the need for a coordinated approach across core areas, "Coordinated initiatives must be taken in the fundamental areas of adaptation, mitigation, climate finance, capacity building, technology transfer, transparency, and compliance, and we must work in unknown areas to increase opportunities for international funding."
Speakers at the event highlighted the necessity for youth to acquire Green Skills, foster entrepreneurship, integrate research with advocacy, and raise awareness about climate finance. They noted the urgency of ensuring the sustainable use of the country's natural resources, particularly water, and limiting its over-exploitation.
Experts also called for the development of a specialised market for climate adaptation, which could ensure effective coordination between research and advocacy for long-term sustainable solutions.
The launch was also attended by AKM Sohail, UN Wing chief at the Economic Relations Division, Ministry of Finance; Dr Anwar Zahid, senior researcher at the Institute of Water Modelling (IWM); Dr Hasib M Irfanullah, Researcher – Environment and Climate Change; and Ratul Dev, executive director of GenLab and recipient of UNLEASH Sustainability Award.
