DCCI unveils its journal, tax guide
Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman noted that although Bangladesh has undertaken various initiatives to boost economic growth in recent years, the country’s overall economy has not yet reached the desired level, which leaves ample room for further improvement.
The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) unveiled the second edition of its "DCCI Journal of Business and Economic Policy (DJBEP)" and the "Tax Guide 2025-26," two of its own publications, at a ceremony yesterday (1 December).
Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman attended the event at the DCCI Auditorium as the chief guest, while Policy Research Institute (PRI) Chairman Zaidi Sattar, also chief editor of the journal, and National Board of Revenue (NBR) Member GM Abul Kalam Kaikobad were present as special guests, according to a press release.
DCCI President Taskeen Ahmed said that for the past four decades, the DCCI has been publishing the DCCI Tax Guide to inform its members about changes in income tax, VAT, and customs laws.
He stressed the need to expand the tax net, ensure full automation of the revenue payment process, and simplify and reform relevant tax policies to sustain the country's overall development growth and increase the tax-GDP ratio.
The DCCI has been consistently conducting data-driven research and preparing sector-specific recommendations for the advancement of the private sector and the overall economy, he added.
Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman noted that although Bangladesh has undertaken various initiatives to boost economic growth in recent years, the country's overall economy has not yet reached the desired level, which leaves ample room for further improvement.
Acknowledging the DCCI's research efforts, he said that through targeted studies and publications on issues such as "rules of origin" and other trade-related matters, the DCCI can play an even more proactive role in advancing the country's economy.
Meanwhile, PRI Chairman Zaidi Sattar said recent reports from various research institutions indicate an alarming rise in poverty levels in Bangladesh, which is a concern for the state of the overall economy.
He remarked that expanding employment opportunities will help reverse this trend, adding that a greater focus on export-oriented industrialisation is essential in this regard.
Zaidi also stressed the need for urgent reforms to existing trade and investment policies to expand Bangladesh's export opportunities in global markets.
Expressing optimism, he said that the journal published by the DCCI will contribute significantly to shaping future economic and business strategies of the country.
NBR Member GM Abul Kalam Kaikobad said the Tax Guide published by the DCCI will further ease the online tax payment process for taxpayers at all levels.
He mentioned that nearly 2 million taxpayers have already used the online system to file their taxes and that the NBR expects at least 5 million people to use this system in the current year.
Kaikobad expressed hope that the online tax payment system will bring convenience to the public, reduce harassment, and ensure transparency in the country's overall revenue administration.
DCCI Vice President Md Salem Sulaiman and members of the board of directors were also present during the occasion.
