Coordinated action needed to combat drug abuse: Speakers

Speakers at a discussion today (21 March) emphasised that controlling drug abuse requires coordinated efforts and a comprehensive action plan involving all sections of society, particularly students and teachers in educational institutions.
At a discussion titled "What Do Youth Think", organised by Drug Forum, the first university-based anti-drug organisation in Bangladesh, they highlighted the urgent need for collective action to tackle drug addiction, reads a press release.
The event was held at the Stamford University Bangladesh auditorium.
Speaking at the discussion, Khorshed Chanchal, deputy director of the Department of Narcotics Control, described drug addiction as a "dangerous disease of modern civilization."
He stated that while people are aware of the harmful effects of drugs, overcoming addiction remains extremely challenging.
"Drug control is not possible for any single entity alone. To eradicate drugs, a well-planned and comprehensive strategy is necessary. Students, teachers, and parents must all work together in a coordinated manner to fight this crisis," he added.
Eti Laila Kazi, assistant professor in the Business Administration Department and Convener of Drug Forum, pointed out that drug abuse is pushing the youth towards destruction. "From cities to villages, from schools to universities—drugs are accessible everywhere. This has led to severe social degradation," she said, adding that Drug Forum was established to raise awareness and combat the spread of narcotics.
During the event, both students and teachers pledged to continue working towards drug prevention.
Rumana Haque Rita, member of the Board of Trustees of Stamford University Bangladesh, Registrar Muhammad Abdul Matin, and Acting Chairman of the Law Department Israt Jahan Eni were also present at the programme.
