Barguna farmers lose crops worth Tk6 cr to Amphan

Cyclone Amphan has caused Tk6.16 crore in agricultural losses in Barguna as storms and tidal surges partially damaged crops on 263 hectares of land, according to the district agriculture department.

Crops damaged in the cyclone include maize, groundnut, sunflower, sesame, pepper, summer vegetables, betel, banana, papaya and mango.

Some 3,045 farmers in the district incurred losses because of the cyclone.

According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), crops were planted on 16,584 hectares of land in the district.

SM Badrul Alam, acting deputy director of DAE, said that the cyclone Amphan, crops of 263 hectares of land in the district have been partially damaged, but crops of 107 hectares of land have been completely destroyed. 

"We have sent a list of damaged crops and affected farmers to the Ministry of Agriculture," said Badrul Alam.

"The damage caused by the cyclone in Barguna is much less than other districts and the administration will stand by the cyclone affected farmers as per the list," said Barguna Deputy Commissioner Mostain Billah.
