DSE turnover jumps 16% amid profit-booking pressure

Turnover on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) jumped by 16% to Tk653.69 crore today (15 July), reflecting increased investor participation despite selling pressure driven by profit booking.
On the day, DSEX, the benchmark index of the bourse, edged up slightly to close at 5,062 points, while the blue-chip DS30 index dipped by 9 points to 1,890.
Of the 395 issues traded, 163 advanced, 156 declined, and 76 remained unchanged.
EBL Securities, in its daily market commentary, said the benchmark index of the Dhaka bourse closed on a flat terrain for three consecutive sessions as investors continued to book recent profits, while resilient buyers also showed resilience amid optimism driven by positive macroeconomic developments.
The recent increase in investor participation spurred some invigorating market activity, adding strength to the market's momentum, it added.
On the sectoral front, textile issues recorded the highest turnover, contributing 12.2% to the DSE's total turnover, followed by the pharmaceuticals and engineering sectors.
Sectors displayed mixed returns, out of which paper, life insurance and jute exhibited the most positive returns on the bourse, while mutual fund, ceramic and travel exerted some correction.
Sea Pearl Beach Resort was the day's top-traded stock, contributing 3.7% to the DSE's total turnover. It was followed by Agni Systems and Monno Ceramic.
Apex Spinning topped the gainers' list with a 10% surge to Tk125.4 per share. Monospool Paper rose by 9.97% to Tk104.7, while Apex Tannery gained 9.88% to close at Tk75.6.
On the losing side, Express Insurance posted the sharpest fall, dropping 7.51% to Tk43.1.
Meanwhile, the port city bourse, Chittagong Stock Exchange, closed slightly lower. The selective categories' index (CSCX) and all-share price index (CASPI) inched down by 2.7 points and 5.9 points, respectively.
