S Alam Group summoned again for polluting Karnaphuli
The department has again fixed October 30 for the hearing

The Department of Environment has asked S Alam Group to appear at the hearing on allegation of polluting Karnaphuli River by discharging untreated liquid wastes.
The incident came into light after a team of the Department of Environment, led by Deputy Director of Mohammad Nurullah Nuri (Chattagram zone), inspected the factory of S Alam Refined Sugar Industries Limited in Karnaphuli upazila on September 11.
Later, the team submitted a report after examining the water collected from the river adjacent to the factory.
Afterward, the Department of Environment directed the authorities of the factory to be present before it for hearing on the issue on September 30.
However, high officials of the factory could not be present at the hearing as they are out of the country. Now the department has again fixed October 30 for the hearing.
Director of the department Md Moyazzem Hossain said, "Liquid waste refinery was closed during the inspection. We also found evidence that the factory directly dumped untreated liquid waste into the river."
Earlier in 2014, the Department of Environment fined five factories of S Alam group Tk1.80 crore for polluting environment.
