Three recently-closed garments factories – Kwun Tong Apparels Ltd of Adamjee Export Processing Zone (EPZ), as well as Lenny Fashions Ltd and Lenny Apparels Limited of the Dhaka Export Processing Zone – have paid their workers' dues.

"The relentless efforts of Bangladesh Export Processing Zone Authority [BEPZA] made it possible to pay the dues after the several rounds of discussions between the executive chairman of BEPZA and the representatives of those companies," read a press release.

Kwun Tong Apparels Ltd, owned by the British Virgin Islands, had been operating business in Adamjee EPZ since 2006. But the company closed their business due to the global economic downturn caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the BEPZA press release adds.

BEPZA asked Kwun Tong Apparels, repeatedly, to pay the dues of the workers of the factory. In this context, the company recently paid Tk18.58 crore to 5,787 workers against their provident fund and gratuity, it added.

Meanwhile, Lenny Fashions and Lenny Apparels Ltd, owned by Hong Kong (China), had been operating in the ready-made garment industry in Dhaka EPZ since 1999 and 2010, respectively. However, the two factories were closed amid the pandemic. They paid a due payment of Tk42.25 crore to 6,730 workers.

BEPZA has been operating eight EPZs in the country through maintaining Worker-Management-Owner Synergy.
